During the last 8 months or so I’ve completely abandoned the first rule of a wellness professional. I quit taking care of myself first. I have allowed any number of excuses to get in the way of workouts, eating and sleeping. I continuously told myself “I’ll get to it eventually and I have too much else to do”. The truth is if you aren’t taking care of yourself, there might not be a later.
But as importantly, if you truly want to achieve great things and have a positive impact on the world then being your best self is the fastest way to making that happen.
Therefore today with the help of a friend who pointed me to a great hiking preserve near my home I have committed to once again start putting me first.
I’m doing things differently this time though. For the first time ever, I’m not using any form of tracking software, or gadgets. Not only am I not carrying my phone I’m also not counting the calories expended or miles walked. The only thing I’m doing is writing on the calendar that I’ve done it. I’m making each walk about enjoying the naturally beautiful surroundings, listening to the sound of the creek and waterfall and generally just allowing my mind to gently wander rather than rush headlong down multiple paths as it usually does. And finally by making it happen at the beginning of the day it puts me in the best mindset possible for being intentional and purpose driven for the rest of the day.
I’ve outlined some Big Hairy Audacious Goals for myself. But the smallest of them has the potential for the biggest impact. I invite you to do the same. Let’s see where we can end up by letting go.
